Doctor Dolittle The Musical Review
Doctor Dolittle The Musical has just begun its North West debut at The Lowry and we were invited along to the show.
The show marks the 50th anniversary celebrations of the original film starring Rex Harrison. The cast is led by Mark Williams as Doctor Dolittle, along with Brian Capron (Coronation Street) as Albert Blossom/ Straight Arrow and Vicky Entwistle (Coronation Street) as Polynesia the Parrot. Adele Anderson plays Lady Bellowes/ Poison Arrow, Mollie Melia-Redgrave is Emma Fairfax, Patrick Sullivan is Matthew Mugg. Thomas Ryan and Harry Cross, both from the North West, share the role of young Tommy Stubbins.
Doctor Dolittle is struggling to make it as the local doctor and soon realises he prefers animals to humans. After his Parrot, Polynesia, speaks to him he decides to learn to converse with other animals. He becomes an amazing animal doctor, learning from them what their ailments are, and how to make them well and happy again.
We see Doctor Dolittle in Court accused of murder because he is caught throwing, what is believed to be a person, into the sea. It is in fact a seal that he is returning home. Doctor Dolittle is finally put in a hospital because of his ‘apparent conversations with animals’. His companions manage to break him free and they set sail on a mission to try to save the Giant Pink Sea Snail.
This new production is directed by Christopher Renshaw and features outstanding puppetry. Vicky Entwistle plays the part of Polynesia the Parrot and she creates the perfect voice for the creature. The animals are so amazing, and combined with the wonderful puppetry, they truly bring the stage to life. The sounds they make are incredible.
The story is a heart-warming tale of good winning over evil. With a fantastic cast and characters, you will be smiling and laughing, from start to finish.
The show is well and truly worthy of the West End, with the performances, singing, choreography and puppetry honestly outstanding.
